Commentary
Sri Lakshmi Ashtakam
Overview
An eight-verse hymn to Goddess Mahalakshmi, traditionally framed as spoken by Indra, king of the gods (from the Padma Purana). Each verse builds a portrait of the Goddess — as cosmic illusion (Maya), destroyer of demons, giver of wisdom and liberation, the primordial power behind yoga, and ultimately the Supreme Brahman itself seated on the lotus — closing each time with the refrain "Mahalakshmi, salutations to you." It ends with a phalashruti describing the benefits of reciting it once, twice, or three times a day.
Indra Uvacha (Indra said)
Verse 1

Namaste'stu mahamaye shripithe surapujite, shankhachakra gadahaste mahalakshmi namo'stu te.
Meaning: Salutations to you, O great cosmic power (Mahamaya), seated on the glorious throne, worshipped by the gods, holding the conch, discus, and mace in your hands — salutations to you, Mahalakshmi.
Note: The opening verse presents Lakshmi not merely as a goddess of wealth but as Mahamaya — the divine power behind creation itself, armed like Vishnu with conch, discus, and mace.
Verse 2

నమస్తే గరుడారూఢే కోలాసుర భయంకరి । సర్వపాపహరే దేవి మహాలక్ష్మి నమోఽస్తు తే ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning: Giver of accomplishment and wisdom, bestower of both worldly enjoyment and liberation, ever the very embodiment of sacred mantra, O Goddess — salutations to you, Mahalakshmi.
Note: Verses 3–4 shift from Lakshmi's power over enemies and sorrow to her role as a source of inner attainment — wisdom, mantra, and moksha, not just material fortune.

ఆద్యంత రహితే దేవి ఆదిశక్తి మహేశ్వరి । యోగజ్ఞే యోగ సంభూతే మహాలక్ష్మి నమోఽస్తు తే ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning: Seated upon the lotus, O Goddess, embodiment of the Supreme Brahman, highest sovereign, mother of the universe — salutations to you, Mahalakshmi.
Note: This verse is the philosophical high point of the hymn — Lakshmi is identified outright with Parabrahman, the formless Absolute, rather than being praised only as a consort or bestower of fortune.

Mahalakshmashtakam stotram yah pathedbhaktiman narah, sarva siddhimavapnoti rajyam prapnoti sarvada. Ekakale pathennityam mahapapa vinashanam, dvikalam yah pathennityam dhana dhanya samanvitah. Trikalam yah pathennityam mahashatru vinashanam, mahalakshmirbhavennityam prasanna varada shubha.
Meaning: Whoever recites this Mahalakshmi Ashtakam with devotion attains every accomplishment and, always, prosperity. Reciting it once daily destroys great sin; reciting it twice daily brings wealth and grain; reciting it three times daily destroys great enemies — and Mahalakshmi remains ever gracious, granting boons and auspiciousness.
Note: As with many phalashruti sections, the closing verses turn the hymn into a practical formula — frequency of recitation is tied to specific, escalating benefits, from removing sin to attracting prosperity and finally overcoming adversity.
Structure at a glance: frame — spoken by Indra (heading) → eight verses of praise, each naming a different aspect of the Goddess (cosmic power, destroyer of evil, giver of wisdom and liberation, primordial yogic energy, fierce majesty, identity with Brahman, universal motherhood) and closing on the same refrain → phalashruti describing the benefits of reciting once, twice, or three times daily.
