Ashtalakshmi Stotram
Overview
A garland of eight verses in praise of Ashta Lakshmi — the eight forms in which Goddess Lakshmi presides over different domains of a flourishing life. Each verse addresses one form by name — Adi (the primordial Lakshmi), Dhanya (grain and agricultural abundance), Dhairya (courage), Gaja (royal prosperity and elephant-borne majesty), Santana (progeny), Vijaya (victory), Vidya (knowledge), and Dhana (wealth) — and closes on the same refrain, "Jaya jayahe Madhusudana kamini," hailing her as the beloved of Madhusudana (Vishnu) before asking that particular form of the Goddess for protection. A closing phalashruti offers salutations to Ashta Lakshmi as Vishnu's consort in her all-pervading, four-armed form bearing the conch, discus, and mace.
Verse 1 — Adi Lakshmi

Meaning: O beautiful one, honored by the noble-minded, beloved of Madhava (Vishnu), sister of the moon, golden and radiant. Revered by hosts of sages, giver of liberation, sweet of speech, praised by the Vedas. Dweller in the lotus, worshipped by the gods, showering good qualities, ever at peace. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — O Adi Lakshmi, protect and sustain me.
Note: As "Adi" (primordial) Lakshmi, this form is invoked first as the source from which the other seven aspects unfold — she is described here in terms that are less about a specific domain of prosperity and more about her essential, all-encompassing radiance and grace.
Verse 2 — Dhanya Lakshmi

Meaning: O destroyer of the impurities of this age, embodiment of Vedic tradition, filled with the Vedas. Of auspicious form, born from the ocean of milk, dwelling in sacred mantras, praised through mantras. Bestower of good fortune, dweller in the lotus, at whose feet the hosts of gods take shelter. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — O Dhanya Lakshmi, always protect me.
Note: "Dhanya" means grain, and this form governs agricultural abundance and food security — invoking her as born from the churned ocean of milk (kshira-samudbhava) ties her directly to the Samudra Manthan myth from which Lakshmi herself emerged.
Verse 3 — Dhairya Lakshmi

Meaning: O bestower of great boons and victory, consort of Vishnu, born of the line of Bhrigu, the very embodiment of sacred mantra, filled with mantra. Worshipped by the hosts of gods, swift to grant results, one who unfolds true knowledge, praised in the scriptures. Remover of worldly fear, releaser from sin, whose feet are the refuge of virtuous people. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — O Dhairya Lakshmi, protect and sustain me.
Note: "Dhairya" means courage or steadfastness — she is prayed to as the one who dissolves bhava-bhaya (the fear born of worldly existence), making this the verse devotees often turn to when facing hardship or uncertainty.
Verse 4 — Gaja Lakshmi

Jaya jaya durgati nashini kamini, sarvaphalaprada shastramaye. Rathagaja turagapadati samavrita, parijana mandita lokanute. Harihara brahma supujita sevita, tapa nivarini padayute. Jaya jayahe madhusudana kamini, Gajalakshmi rupena palaya mam.
Meaning: Victory, victory to the destroyer of misfortune, granter of all rewards, embodiment of the scriptures. Surrounded by chariots, elephants, horses, and foot-soldiers, adorned by attendants and praised throughout the world. Worshipped and served by Hari, Hara, and Brahma, remover of affliction. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — protect me in your form as Gaja Lakshmi.
Note: "Gaja" means elephant, and this verse pictures Lakshmi in full royal procession — the imagery of chariots, elephants, cavalry, and retinue evokes sovereignty and worldly majesty, the prosperity that comes with rightful power.
Verse 5 — Santana Lakshmi

Meaning: O rider of the bird (Garuda), enchantress, wielder of the discus, one who deepens devotion, filled with knowledge. Ocean of virtues, wisher of welfare for the world, adorned by the seven musical notes, praised in song. Bowed to by all gods and demons alike, by the lords of sages, and by humankind. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — O Santana Lakshmi, may you protect me.
Note: "Santana" means offspring or lineage — this is the form devotees invoke for children and the continuity of family, and it is fitting that the verse leans on Vishnu's own vahana (Garuda) and discus, binding this Lakshmi closely to her consort's protective power.
Verse 6 — Vijaya Lakshmi
Jaya kamalasini sadgati dayini, jnanavikasini ganamaye. Anudina-marchita kunkuma dhusara, bhushita vasita vadyanute. Kanakadharastuti vaibhava vandita, shankaradeshika manyapade. Jaya jayahe madhusudana kamini, Vijayalakshmi sada palaya mam.
Meaning: Victory to the one seated on the lotus, giver of the good path, unfolder of wisdom, filled with music. Daily worshipped with vermilion, adorned and fragrant, praised with musical instruments. Glorified through the Kanakadhara Stuti, honored in splendor, whose feet are esteemed by the teacher Shankara. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — O Vijaya Lakshmi, always protect me.
Note: This verse alone names a specific composition — the Kanakadhara Stuti, Adi Shankaracharya's famous hymn that is said to have caused Lakshmi to rain down golden amla fruits on a poor household — directly linking Vijaya Lakshmi's grace to that well-known story of unexpected abundance.
Verse 7 — Vidya Lakshmi
Pranata sureshvari bharati bhargavi, shokavinashini ratnamaye. Manimaya bhushita karnavibhushana, shanti samavrita hasyamukhe. Navanidhi dayini kalimalaharini, kamita phalaprada hastayute. Jaya jayahe madhusudana kamini, Vidyalakshmi sada palaya mam.
Meaning: O one bowed to by the lord of the gods, embodiment of learning, born of the line of Bhrigu, destroyer of sorrow, radiant as a jewel. Adorned with gem-studded earrings, her smiling face filled with serenity. Bestower of the nine treasures, remover of the impurities of this age, whose hands grant the fulfillment of desires. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — O Vidya Lakshmi, always protect me.
Note: "Vidya" means knowledge, and this verse's language (bharati, "of learning") deliberately echoes Saraswati even while addressing Lakshmi — a reminder that in the Ashtalakshmi framework, wisdom itself is understood as a form of the Goddess's abundance, not separate from it.
Verse 8 — Dhana Lakshmi

Dhimidhimi dhindhimi dhindhimi-dindhimi, dundhubhi nada supurnamaye. Ghumaghuma ghunghuma ghunghuma ghunghuma, shankha ninada suvadyanute. Veda puranetihasa supujita, vaidika marga pradarshayute. Jaya jayahe madhusudana kamini, Dhanalakshmi rupena palaya mam.
Meaning: To the rhythm of dhimi-dhimi drumbeats, filled with the full resonance of the kettledrum. To the sound of ghum-ghum conches, praised by fine instruments. Worshipped through the Vedas, Puranas, and epics, showing the path of Vedic tradition. Victory, victory to you, beloved of Madhusudana — protect me in your form as Dhana Lakshmi.
Note: Unlike the other seven verses, this one opens with pure sound — onomatopoeic syllables for drums and conches rather than descriptive epithets — evoking the noise of temple worship and festive celebration that traditionally accompanies wealth and its enjoyment.
Phalashruti (Fruits of Recitation)

Ashtalakshmi namastubhyam varade kamarupini. Vishnuvakshah sthala-rudhe bhakta moksha pradayini. Shankha chakragadahaste vishvarupini te jayah. Jaganmatre cha mohinyai mangalam shubha mangalam.
Meaning: Salutations to you, O Ashta Lakshmi, granter of boons, who takes the form desired by your devotees. You who reside upon the chest of Vishnu, bestower of liberation to your devotees. Bearing the conch, discus, and mace, all-pervading in form — victory to you. To the mother of the universe, the enchantress, all glory and auspiciousness.
Note: The closing shlokas step back from the eight individual forms to address the Goddess in her single, unified identity as Vishnu's eternal consort and Jaganmata (mother of the universe) — resolving the eightfold praise into one salutation.
Structure at a glance: eight verses, each dedicated to one form of Lakshmi — Adi (primordial grace, v1), Dhanya (grain and abundance, v2), Dhairya (courage, v3), Gaja (royal prosperity, v4), Santana (progeny, v5), Vijaya (victory, v6), Vidya (knowledge, v7), Dhana (wealth, v8) — each closing on the shared refrain "Jaya jayahe Madhusudana kamini," followed by a two-shloka phalashruti that unites all eight forms in a single salutation to the Goddess as Vishnu's consort and mother of the universe.
