Tava Dasoham

Overview

"Tava Dasoham" is a Telugu kriti composed by Tyagaraja, one of the "Trinity" of Carnatic music, set in raga Punnagavarali and Adi tala. It is a short, intensely personal composition — a direct address to Rama (Dasarathe, "O son of King Dasaratha"), built almost entirely around a single repeated declaration of surrender: tava dāsōhaṃ, "I am your servant." Each of the seven charanams adds a fresh epithet praising Rama's qualities, while returning again and again to that same avowal of servitude and refuge.

It is also commonly heard in the "Odam" piece played at the muhurtam (auspicious moment) of Tamil weddings. Its slow, regal phrasing suits the tone of quiet, total surrender found in this kriti.

Meaning: I declare there is no god on this earth like you — therefore I have taken refuge in you. O Dasarathe! I am your servant.

ఆగమ వినుత రాగ విరహిత త్యాగరాజ నుత దాశరథే (తవ)

āgama vinuta rāga virahita tyāgarāja nuta dāśarathē (tava)
